Imagining the digital future of Disney’s breakout trading card game

Ravensburger invited Riftweaver to pitch on the digital evolution of Disney Lorcana, their fast-growing trading card game. Our concept, Lorcana Enchanted, translated the richness of the physical card experience into an intuitive digital platform by simplifying card interactions, introducing illustrated play spaces inspired by tabletop playmats, and creating systems for seasonal content and ongoing player engagement.

As Creative Director on the project, I led the vision for the pitch, guiding the gameplay experience, interaction design, and visual direction. I worked closely with product designers, game designers, animators, and illustrators to develop the platform concept, and was part of the team that presented the work to the Ravensburger stakeholders.

We introduced the name Disney Lorcana: Enchanted as a magical extension of the brand for the digital experience.

The core of the concept used a system of richly illustrated interactive playmats, inspired directly by Lorcana card art. Each board became a miniature Disney world—from Sherwood Forest to Mount Olympus—while the corners of the playmat acted as tactile fidgets, giving players small interactive moments to explore during gameplay.

Collecting is the emotional core of trading card games. We designed the digital experience to make discovery feel playful and tactile, from animated pack openings to cosmetic customizations inspired by card artwork.

To bridge the physical and digital worlds, we explored QR-enabled cards, allowing players to bring their physical collections into the game. We also redesigned the digital card format, introducing a square card system that revealed the full card mechanics through taps and hover interactions.

Lorcana serves a wide range of players, from Disney fans casually collecting cards to highly competitive players. We developed player personas and designed a content calendar tailored to different play styles. Daily quests, seasonal events, leagues, and evolving story content created something for everyone.
